Markus Zimmerman Receives Superior Performance Award
(L to R): Deputy Director Mike Easley, Director Gary Casteel, Markus Zimmerman, and Vice President Brad McCain.

Markus Zimmerman, a Mechanical Engineer Associate II for COMET, was honored with the Superior Performance Award for Support at the Illuminations Award Banquet held March 29, 2025, at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, FL.

The award recognized Markus for his substantial contributions in support of the Emergency Egress System (EES) pre-acceptance, acceptance testing, stand-alone Verification and Validation (V&V), and overall system operation.

As a newly assigned system lead engineer for EES (he joined COMET in March 2024), Markus organized information and established multiple trackers that accounted for training, system concerns, personnel required for each task, and constraints to V&V and system turnover.

He leveraged six years of previous experience on the Space Shuttle Program and demonstrated his technical abilities with the Shuttle slide-wire egress system to oversee and ensure a smooth transition to the new EES.

“I was very surprised to hear my name announced for this award, given my short time on the COMET contract,” said Markus. “I’m very grateful to the leadership team for their support and recognition and for my local team for recommending me for the Superior Performance Award.”

He led the training efforts for a core team of technicians on the new system and once the core team was trained, he assumed a functional leadership role to oversee training the core team provided for additional members, which resulted in an additional two crews ready for EES operations and maintenance.

With two crews trained, Markus developed a plan for a multishift operations to complete Integrated Systems V&V (ISVV-1) that provided equipment familiarization training to the Launch Director and flight, closeout, and pad rescue crews.

His demonstrated performance in system knowledge, team focused efforts, and a willingness to go above and beyond not only supported program milestones - they exceeded all expectations.

“This was a massive undertaking and wouldn’t be possible without so many others, and I’m looking forward to the Artemis II flow when we can bring it all together!”
