James Govern, a Systems Engineer for the MIST II contract at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), was honored on June 5, 2024, with a 2024 Mission Engineering and Systems Analysis Division Excellence Award for Unsung Hero for his outstanding service and dedication to the Roman Space Telescope Project and Integrated Modeling community.
According to his nomination, James “fosters a collaborative working relationship with government management personnel, emphasizing open communication and delivery of essential contract task data products.”
His tasks cover a range of disciplines on the Roman and VIPER projects, including integrated modeling, mechanical design/engineering, mission systems engineering, and Information and Technology, among others. James consistently maintains a positive attitude, inspiring colleagues to strive for excellence.
James also serves as a trusted point of contact for many Roman schedule-critical procurements. He recently coordinated the Wide Field Instrument (WFI) Grism/Prism flight hardware anomaly rework activities, critical integration and testing equipment for WFI thermal vacuum tests, and a technically complex vibration isolation system for WFI Stimulus of Ray Cones (SORC), which included development of procurement documents, interface design, and accommodation requirements.
The Roman project was dependent on James’ ability to handle various responsibilities, particularly in navigating urgent procurement processes to ensure timely delivery of critical hardware. His dependability and commitment to service were evident in his consistent follow-through on tasks and ensured essential components were delivered to support key milestones.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding and an honor to be a part of the Roman Space Telescope project at GSFC,” said James. “I truly appreciate the recognition and the amazing support from the team that’s been with me every step of the way.”
