ESSCA’s Tony Harrison supports Bama Relief and Recovery Efforts

According to the National Weather Service, on May 8- 9, 2024, north Alabama was hit by 14 tornadoes, including two EF-3s. Storms damaged homes and knocked down power lines and trees near downtown, but thankfully no injuries were reported.

Once again, a disaster of this magnitude called for support from a unique relief and recovery team known as PAR (Prepare and Respond).

A permanent response team, PAR was born out of necessity more than 13 years ago after a wave of tornadoes swirled around Alabama in April 2011 and volunteers organized and pooled their resources and skills to begin cleaning up the damage.

A dedicated member of the PAR Team is Tony Harrison, a Systems Engineer/Subject Matter Expert on the ESSCA contract. The 67-year-old supported tornado cleanups in Huntsville on May 10, 2024, in the Lincoln Village area and one week later in the Blossomwood area.

“Large trees were down on the properties and in a couple instances, on the roof of the homes,” said Tony. “The team carefully removed the trees without causing additional damage to the homes and installed tarps to prevent further water getting into the homes.”

For Tony and his PAR teammates, support to the needy after such destructive events is truly a higher calling.

“It is very rewarding to be able to assist those homeowners that are elderly, disabled or uninsured and not able to do the storm cleanup themselves and often cannot afford to pay someone to do the cleanup.”
